What is Sponsor Residential ?
Sponsor Residential Service provides a supportive home environment for adults with disabilities who need help with daily living. In this program, individuals live in the home of a trained caregiver (called a sponsor) who provides care and assistance. This service helps individuals gain skills to live more independently in their community while ensuring their health and safety.
Who Provides This Service?
Caregivers, or "sponsors," are trained individuals or families who open their homes to provide daily support. They work under an agency licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), which ensures quality care and supervision.
What Kind of Support is Included?
Help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and cooking
Support in learning life skills, such as managing money and using public transportation
Encouragement to participate in community activities and social events
Assistance with medical needs, including medication management
Guidance in developing positive behaviors and coping skills
Transportation to appointments, grocery stores, or recreational activities
Who Qualifies for This Service?
Individuals must be approved through Medicaid’s Community Living (CL) Waiver program. A personalized care plan is created to determine if Sponsored Residential Service is the best fit for their needs.
Additional Things to Know:
Individuals can live with one or two other people in a sponsor’s home.
Sponsors provide care up to 24 hours a day.
Medicaid pays for the service, but it does not cover rent or food costs.
This service cannot be combined with other similar residential services like group homes.
Who Oversees the Program?
Northern Virginia Support Services provides ongoing supervision and training to ensure sponsors meet all care requirements. Regular check-ins and documentation are required to maintain high-quality support for individuals.
